What size do I need?

What length suspenders do I need for my height?
Length depends on the listing, so check the size options on the product page before you go to Amazon. The Airport-Friendly 1.5-Inch X-Back pair, for example, lists 42 inches for 5'0" to 5'9", 48 inches for 5'9" to 6'2", 54 inches for 6'1" to 6'5" and 60 inches for 6'4" to 6'9". Taller than about 6'2"? Start with big and tall suspenders.
Are suspenders one size fits all?
Most are adjustable, but every pair has a limit. The Big and Tall Y-Back Swivel Hook pair, for example, adjusts from 32.7 to 50 inches. Check the length range in the specifications on each product page.
How tight should suspenders be?
Snug enough to hold your trousers at the waist with the straps lying flat, but not so tight that they lift the waistband or pull at your shoulders. Our fit guide covers different builds.
How do I adjust the length?
Put the suspenders on, then slide the adjusters a little at a time and check the back in a mirror. Our guide to adjusting suspender length walks through it.

Clip, button or hook: which should I buy?
Clips grip the waistband of almost any pants. Buttons fasten to buttons inside the waistband and are the traditional choice with suits and tuxedos. Hooks fasten over belt loops or the waistband, and swivel hooks turn as you move. See clip vs button suspenders for the full comparison.
X-back or Y-back?
An X-back crosses between the shoulders and usually fastens at four points. A Y-back joins into one strap at the back and usually fastens at three, so it sits flatter under a jacket. More in our X-back guide.
Which width should I choose?
1 inch is the slim dress width, 1.5 inches is the everyday standard, and 2 inches is the work and heavy-duty width. See all wide suspenders.
Can you wear a belt with suspenders?
Both hold your trousers up, so most style guides say pick one. If you want both, belt loop and belt clip styles fasten at the belt line instead of the waistband. Read more in belt with suspenders.
Are there suspenders with no metal, or ones that hide under a shirt?
No metal suspenders use plastic or other non-metal hardware, and hidden suspenders are made to sit under your clothes. Screening rules are set by the airport, not by the listing.
