Description
Five pieces make up the costume: a pair of old man glasses, a suspender, a bow tie, a false beard and eyebrow set, and an inflatable cane. The glasses use plastic frames with clear lenses that do not alter vision, so they can be worn for a full day without eye strain. The suspender and bow tie are polyester, the beard and eyebrows are soft artificial hair rather than the scratchy kind, and the cane inflates from thickened PVC so it packs flat and can be used again next year.
The hundredth day of school is the event this kit was built for, the day children are asked to turn up as hundred-year-olds and most parents discover they own nothing suitable. It works equally for stage plays, school performances, fancy dress parties and photograph days, and thirteen styles are offered, varying the pattern of the suspender and bow tie so that a class or a group of friends can arrive in different versions rather than as identical copies of one another. The cane tends to do most of the acting.
The suspender uses a Y-back and adjusts on both straps, which is what lets a single kit fit across a fairly wide range of heights instead of being pinned to one age. The bow tie has its own adjustable band, so it can be set to the neck once and left there. Because the cane inflates rather than being solid, it is harmless in a crowded classroom and deflates for storage until the next dress-up day comes round.
